Phnom Penh (VNA) – The election of the fourth Cambodian Senate will take place on January 15, 2018, said Minister of Information Kieu Khanharith.

The official wrote on his Facebook page on June 15 that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced the decision at a meeting of the Council of Ministers earlier on the same day.

The Cambodian Senate election is held every six year. In the third Senate election on January, 29, 2012, the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Hun Sen gained victory as it secured 46 seats, while the Sam Rainsy Party earned 11 seats.

According to Cambodia’s law, besides two members assigned by the King and two others elected by the National Assembly, other senators were voted by members of commune and ward councils.

Preliminary result of the commune and ward elections on June 4 showed that the CPP takes the lead by having 6,521 out of 11,572 council seats in 1,646 communes and wards across the country.-VNA
