Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced new measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and its new Delta variant including temporarily closing border gates to Vietnam and Thailand.

In an address on July 1, Hun Sen ordered authorities to strengthen the monitoring of all arrivals into the Kingdom via land, waterways and air.

In addition, he told forces guarding the border to conduct rapid COVID-19 tests on all arrivals without exception, saying that testing, especially rapid tests at the border, continued to be extremely important.

He said relevant authorities must properly prepare locations for more quarantine centres and strengthen the supply of medical equipment in areas along the border, especially in the provinces bordering Thailand.
Hun Sen asked all health officials in provinces to ensure that patients testing positive to the Delta variant are treated in separate facilities and isolated in quarantine centres for 21 days.

In June alone, Cambodia detected 22 cases of Delta and Delta Plus variants of the coronavirus among Cambodian workers returning from Thailand./.
