Cambodia has dismissed accusations from Thailand that it is constructing buildings in Ta Krabey, part of Thai territory, as unfounded, said a senior Cambodian diplomat on May 4.

Koy Kuong, a spokesperson for Cambodia ’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in his statement added that at the end of last month Thailand ’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent a diplomatic note to the Cambodian Embassy in Thailand claiming sovereignty over the said area.

In another related move, Cambodia ’s Ministry of Defence spokesperson Chhum Socheat confirmed that the construction work in Ta Krabey is a logistics depot to support Cambodian border troops and that the construction is located deep inside Cambodia ’s territory, 500 m away from Thailand .

On the same day, Cambodia sent a diplomatic note to Thailand ’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, claiming that the Keo Sikha Kiri Svara Pagoda is also part of Cambodia ’s sovereign territory.

Thailand has not yet responded to the claim.

Tension along the Thai-Cambodian border persists with continual exchanges of fire between troops from both countries in the recent past.

However, positive signs have shown recently in their relations. The Thai government adopted a document on border negotiations with Cambodia last month while Cambodian foreign minister Hor Nam Hong said his country is ready to send its ambassador back to Bangkok if Thailand does the same thing./.
