Fragrant rice from Cambodia and Thailand was awarded the title of world’s best rice in 2014 during the 6th World Rice Conference in Phnom Penh on November 20.

Twenty five rice samples from 15 countries and territories, including Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Myanmar and the US, were submitted to the competition.

President of the Cambodian Rice Federation Sok Puthyvuth said this was the third time Cambodia’s fragrant rice (Romduol) won the award.

During the first 10 months of this year, Cambodia exported 304,788 tonnes of rice, earning around 180 million USD.

Chookiat Ophaswongse, President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, said Thailand was one of the world's largest rice exporters, adding that their rice quality was recognised internationally.

The country has so far exported approximately 8 million tonnes of rice, which is expected to reach 10.5 million tonnes by the end of the year.-VNA
