Cambodia, Thailand work to improve military ties

The promise was made in Cambodia during a 30-minute meetingbetween Gen. Pol Saroeun, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal CambodianArmed Forces, and visiting Gen. Thanasak Patimaprakorn, Chief of DefenceForces of the Royal Thai Armed Forces.

In themeeting, Gen. Pol Saroeun suggested that both sides' armies put previousborder clashes aside and look forward to building a border of peace,development and cooperation for the interests of the two peoples.

Gen. Thanasak Patimaprakorn agreed with the idea and asked for the Cambodian side’s good cooperation.

Cambodia and Thailand have had sporadic border conflict overterritorial dispute near Preah Vihear temple since the UNESCO listed thetemple as a World Heritage Site on July 7, 2008 and witnessed fierceclashes in February and April, 2011 during Thailand 's Democrat Partyrule.

During the interval of waiting for theverdict interpretation, as Cambodia ’s request, the International Courtof Justice (ICJ) ordered Cambodia and Thailand on July 18, 2011to immediately withdraw their military personnel from the ProvisionalDemilitarized Zone (PDZ) and allow ASEAN observers (Indonesians) toaccess to the zone to monitor ceasefire.

Malaysia's layoffs rise 47% in first quarter

The report, based on figures from Malaysia’s Social Security Organisation, showed layoffs peaked in January with around 10,700 cases before easing to 7,500 in February and 5,900 in March.
