A funeral for late chief of the ruling Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) and President of the Senate, Chea Sim, will be held on June 19, according to the Prime Minister’s circular.

All ministries, institutions, schools, hospitals, pagodas and civil servants, armed forces, as well as people across the country must fly the flag at half-mast n Jun 19, said the circular signed by PM Hun Sen on June 8.

All radios and television stations must suspend broadcasting joyful spectacles on the day, it added.

Chea Sim, who passed away to illness at 15.45 (local time) on June 8 at the age of 83 served as President of the National Assembly of Cambodia from 1981-1998.

He held various positions in both the executive and legislative branches of government, ranging from Chairman of the Council of State to Minister of the Interior and the head of both the lower and upper houses.

He was elected as President of the CPP on its establishment in 1991 and President of the Senate in 1999.-VNA
