Urgent aid of 15.5 million USD was sent to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) from donor countries to help ECCC tackle financial difficulties which have negatively impacted on its staff activities.

ECCC spokesman Huy Vannak said the move follows the recent meeting between ECCC officials and donor countries’ representatives at United Nations Headquarters in New York . At the meeting, donors agreed to supply ECCC with 89 million USD for operation in 2012 and 2013, including 20 million USD for Cambodian staff and 69 million for foreign staff.

Vannak added that 12 million USD had already been collected from six countries to assist Cambodian employees in ECCC, while Japan donated 3.5 million USD to support foreign staff.

ECCC staff have been working without salary since October, 2011 and many have had to leave to take up other work. Huy Vannak says he is giving up his position to work for CNC Television.-VNA
