Cambodian opposition party continues to protest poll

Under the official result announced by the country’s National Election Committee (NEC) on September 8, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) now holds 68 seats in the parliament while the CNRP takes the remaining 55.

Talking to the press on September 8, Rainsy said that the results do not reflect the aspirations of voters and claimed that there were many irregularities in the polling process.

He declared that the CNRP was calling a massive nonviolent demonstration for three consecutive days on September 15, 16, 17 at the Freedom Park in Phnom Penh .

CNRP vice president Kem Sokha stated that the party will also boycott the first session of the National Assembly if the problem is not resolved.

Preliminary results announced by the NEC on August 12 showed that the CPP won over 3.2 million votes and the opposition, 2.9 million.

Meanwhile, the CPP issued a press release stressing that the election took place in a peaceful, free and fair manner, while appealed to the people to continue to unite under the leadership of the King and back the new government in developing the country.

CPP also called on the CNRP to join the new National Assembly in the interest of the national and the people.-VNA
