The Cambodian Rice Exporters Association was established recently, with the participation of 100 rice exporters and millers nationwide, aiming at achieving annual exports of one million tonnes by 2015.

The association’s President Lim Bunheng, who is also the Chairman of leading rice exporter Loran Import-Export Co. Ltd, said the aim of the establishment was to unite all rice exporters and millers nationwide in order to supply large quantities of rice to foreign buyers.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Commerce, Cambodia exported 170,770 tonnes of rice last year, a year-on-year increase of 22 percent, earning 104 million USD, up 197 percent from 35 million USD in 2010.

It is estimated that the country needs roughly 350 million USD to invest in hi-tech post-harvest technology and to purchase paddy rice from farmers, to reach the one million tonne goal by 2015./.
