Military troops stationed within the area of the Preah Vihear temple near the border with Thailand have been put on high alert from Jul. 1-7.

The move is in reaction to possible turbulence around the time of the first anniversary of the day Preah Vihear temple was recognised as a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), local media quoted military sources as saying.

The areas around the temple remain calm now despite signs of escalating tension between Cambodian and Thai militaries after both sides stepped up reinforcement of troops and weapons at the disputed area in recent days.

Before making any further move, Cambodia is waiting to see how Thailand implements its commitment to withdraw its troops from the area leading to the gateway of the temple and to reduce the number of troops in the valley next to the temple, said the Cambodian Daily./.
