Cambodia exported 266,120 tonnes of rice in the first nine months of 2013, a double increase year-on-year, the country’s Government announced on October 9.

President of the Federation of Cambodian Rice Exporters Kim Savuth said that Cambodia expects to export 400,000 tonnes of rice this year, attributing the strong growth to the country’s efforts to boost production and the rising demand from its international markets.

With farmers accounting for 80 percent of the population, Cambodia produced 9.31 tonnes of paddy in 2012. It sets the target of exporting 1 million tonnes of rice by 2015.

The country’s 72 companies now ship their rice to 57 countries and territories, mainly Poland, France, Malaysia, Thailand, Holland and China.-VNA
