Cambodia exported nearly 176,000 tonnes of husked rice in the first six months of this year, up 125 percent of year-on-year, thanks to rising demand on international markets and the Government’s efforts to promote exports.

According to General Secretary of the Alliance of Rice Producers and Exporters of Cambodia Sung Saron, the EU countries is now the biggest consumer of Cambodian rice, accounting for 60 percent of the country’s total export volume in the first six months.

It is followed by ASEAN and East Asian nations such as Thailand , Malaysia and China .

Over the past time, the Cambodian government has taken a wide range of measures to boost rice exports in an effort to reach the target of shipping 1 million tonnes by 2015.

They include encouraging the private sector’s involvement in rice exports, increasing trade promotion activities and seeking new markets.

In 2012, the Southeast Asian country shipped more than 205,700 tonnes of rice abroad.-VNA
