Hanoi (VNA) – The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) held its extraordinary congress on January 19 to discuss and adopt the political programme for the next five years (2018-2023).

In his opening speech, CPP's Honorary President Samdech Heng Samrin said the party must have a very clear political programme to build trust and win voters’ support. He added that the congress would also review the party's achievements in 2017 and set the target for 2018.

Heng Samrin, who is also President of Cambodia’s National Assembly, said 2018 is a special year for Cambodia as the country will hold two major elections, the Senate election on February 25 and the general election on July 29.

The congress will last three days under the chair of CPP's President and Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, with the attendance of some 2,400 party members from across the nation.

The CPP has ruled Cambodia since 1979. In the 2013 general election, the CPP won 68 out of 123 seats of Cambodia’s National Assembly.-VNA
