Responding to International Migrants Day (December 18), the Vietnamese Government, in partnership with the United Nations in Vietnam, has launched a campaign to promote safe labour migration.

The programme aims to improve awareness on activities that will contribute to safer migration, as well as the responsibility of migrants themselves, employers, recruitment agencies, the Government and partners, to develop safe and effective migration.

Labour migration is an option and strategy for Vietnamese families and individuals to improve their income. Moreover, returning migrants with their enhanced skills, knowledge, experience and cultural and social awareness also contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.

Vietnam has introduced important measures to facilitate the legal migration of Vietnamese workers and their safety abroad, including the establishment of a new Migrant Resource Centre in Hanoi.

With support from the International Labour Organisation, the Vietnamese Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour and the Vietnamese Manpower Supply Association have implemented various activities to protect migrant workers from exploitation.

In the spirit of their strong partnership, Vietnam and the UN will continue to work towards empowering migrants to promote and maximise the benefits of safe labour migration in the 2012-2016 period.-VNA
