A conference was held in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on March 17 with the aim of finding ways to effectively utilize the Can Tho International Airport.

A new terminal with a capacity of serving 3-5 million arrivals a year has been put into use at the airport since late 2010. However, in the past three years, the number of people using check-in services has fallen well short of capacity.

Last year, the airport only served 238,000 passengers and handled 1,600 tonnes of goods.

Nguyen Phong Quang, permanent deputy head of the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region, said that the conference offered an opportunity for the airport’s managers to review and evaluate its operations, as well as hear comments from ministries, businesses, investors and customers to better its services.

It also helped boost cooperation to open more domestic and international air routes to the locality in the time to come.

At the event, a memorandum of understanding on strengthening the effective utilisation of direct air routes to the Mekong Delta city was signed.-VNA
