Hanoi (VNA) – Candidates for the seats in the 14th National Assembly (NA) and all-level People’s Councils for the 2016 – 2021 term are engaging in activities to be elected.

The general election will take place on May 22, which is a Sunday as in line with law.

The candidates are canvassing local residents through mass media and direct meetings with voters.

The meetings and media are the platforms for the candidates to introduce their action plans once they are elected, while discussing issues of public interest. Meanwhile, local constituents can have a better understanding of the persons who wish to be their representatives.

Under Article 64 of the Law on election of NA and People’s Council deputies, the voter meetings are carried out from the day the official list of candidates is announced (April 27) until 24 hours before the start of the election (until 7 a.m. of May 21).

The electioneering must be conducted in a democratic, open and equal fashion, in conformity with the law, and ensure social order and safety.

On April 19, the standing board of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee issued the guidance on the organisation of the voter meetings.

Accordingly, the standing boards of provincial VFF chapters and the provincial People’s Committees will hold voter meetings for the candidates in the NA and People’s Councils of those provinces.

The voter meetings for those running for membership in the People’s Councils at the district and commune levels will be organised by the standing boards of VFF chapters and People’s Committees at the respective levels.

After the functions, the provincial VFF chapters’ standing boards have to report on the meetings and constituents’ opinions to the VFF Central Committee’s standing board. Voters’ feedback will be submitted to the first session of the 14th parliament.

The first meetings with voters took place on May 4 such as those in Can Tho city, Da Nang city, and the provinces of Dong Nai, Hau Giang, Dak Nong and Binh Duong.-VNA
