Candles lit in Hanoi cemetery to commemorate martyrs

On July 24 evening, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Hanoi held a ceremony at the City Martyrs' Cemetery to offer incense and light candles to commemorate heroes and martyrs who laid down their lives to defence the nation. This is one of the activities towards the 75th War Invalids and Martyrs' Day (July 27, 1947 - 2022). The City Martyrs' Cemetery, located in Tay Tuu ward of Bac Tu Liem district, is currently the resting place of around 2,000 martyrs born in the capital city but laid down their lives in different localities across the country. Public security personnels participate in incense offerings and candle lighting ceremonies. On July 25, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that the Party, State and people always pay attention to affairs relating to war invalids and sick soldiers, as reflected through pragmatic activities, including the search and gathering of remains and identification of martyrs. In 2013, a project to search for and gather soldiers' remains was approved, under which genetic testing has been utilised, the leader said, noting that 1,389 martyrs have been identified by DNA testing over the past 10 years. He assigned the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs to coordinate with relevant units to establish a national database on martyrs, thus better serving the DNA testing. On the evening of the same day, similar events were held in ceremonies and memorials in nearly 100 cemeteries in 30 districts in the city. They also visited and presented gifts to three Vietnamese heroic mothers, 75 martyrs and policy beneficiary families in the city. In addition, the union presented 2,625 gifts, provided free health checks and medicine to 20,000 war invalids and family members of martyrs, and offered 300 scholarships to descendants of war invalids and martyr families, and those infected with dioxin.
