Secretary General of Thailand's opposition People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) Suthep Thaugsuban has announced that protesters would completely shut down the capital Bangkok on the election day.
Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck confirmed that the general election will go ahead on February 2, following her meeting with the election commission in Bangkok.
Tens of thousands of police will be deployed across Thailand, including some 10,000 in Bangkok, for the February 2 election.
The Thai capital has been shaken by nearly three months of mass street demonstrations demanding Yingluck's government step down.
The main opposition Democrat Party is boycotting the eclection, saying reforms are needed to ensure the vote is truly democratic and to prevent abuse of power by the next government.
Protesters have staged a self-styled "shutdown" of Bangkok since January 13, occupying several main intersections, although attendance has gradually dwindled and disruption has been limited.-VNA
