Cassava exports will hit 1 billion USD by the end of September, an increase of 250 million USD compared to the same period last year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported.

According to the General Customs Office, Vietnam exported 3.2 million tonnes of cassava and related products, worth nearly 974.5 million USD in the first eight months of this year.

The figure represents a rise of 67.5 percent in volume and nearly 43 percent in value.

The office also reported that major buyers of Vietnam’s cassavas include China, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan (China), the Philippines, Malaysia and Japan.

In the 8-month period, China imported nearly 2.9 million tonnes of cassava worth 855 million USD, accounting for nearly 88 percent of Vietnam’s total cassavas export value.

This is the first time this commodity has entered the list of farm produce earning over 1 billion USD in exports, together with rice, coffee and cashew nut.-VNA
