Pleiku Airport in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai will be reopened from 00:01 on September 1 as stipulated in Decision No. 3106 of the Ministry of Transport.

Earlier, flights from and to Pleiku Airport was halted from March 15, 2015 as the airport’s major facilities were upgraded to be capable of receiving big planes.

The two-phase upgrade project began in last September at a cost of 945 billion VND (43.3 million USD). In its second phase, the airport was closed temporarily for over six months given construction works on its runway.

The runway was enlarged from 36 metres in width to 45 metres and from 1,830 metres in length to 2,400 metres in order to accommodate A321, Boeing 737 and other equivalently-sized aircraft.

In addition, the terminal was renovated to serve up to 600 passengers during peak time.

At present, only the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines is using the airport, with flights arriving from Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.

In the future, two low-cost airlines VietJet Air and Jetstar Pacific will also land in the airport.-VNA
