Vietnamese master Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy was awarded a title at the Borloy-Androvitzky Karoly Memorial, which wrapped up in Hungary last week.

No 2 seed Huy, who has been training here for three years, finished 10 matches without a loss and grabbed 7.5 points to take the top position.

The victory is also the third requirement needed to become a Grandmaster. The Vietnam Chess Federation is working on completing the final document to submit to the FIDE.

Huy will next fly to Norway and join teammates to compete at the Chess Olympiad in early August.

In other chess news, 12-year-old Nguyen Anh Khoi of HCM City won the boys' standard chess title in the National Youth Chess Championships' U20 category on July 19.

The host master lost only one of nine games, scoring seven points to win the gold medal.

No 1 seed Tran Tuan Minh, the only defeated Khoi, came in second with 6.5 points.

HCM City took the team title with 13 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals. Hanoi was second, followed by Kien Giang.-VNA
