Chile plans to open an agricultural office in Vietnam in 2010 as part of its strategy to boost exports of its foods and forestry products to Asia.

According to Chilean Minister of Agriculture Marigen Hornkohl, the South American country has already established four similar offices in China , India , Japan and the Republic of Korea .

At a symposium to discuss the opportunities for food exports to Asia on Nov. 9, Minister Hornkohl said that her country regards Asia an important trade destination as it is currently acting as an engine to boost the world’s economic recovery and escape from the current economic-financial crisis.

Chile mainly exports vegetables, fruit, forestry products and wine to Asia and it is pinning a lot of hope on creating a niche for its meat and milk products in this market.

Last year, it earned 2.9 billion USD from its exports of farm and forestry products to Asia, an astonishing surge from 1.8 billion USD in 2006.

Currently, China, Japan and the RoK remain the biggest Asian importers of Chilean farm and forestry products./.
