China ’s State Council (also known as its Cabinet) decided to appoint Chui Sai On as the new Chief Executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) on August 10.

Under the decision, which was made at a cabinet meeting presided by Premier Wen Jiabao, Chui will undertake the position for five years starting December 20, replacing Ho Hau Wah, who will end his second consecutive tenure on December 19.

Earlier, in a vote by southern city’s Chief Executive Election Committee, Chui won 282 votes or 94 percent of the 296 members present.

He had twice served as Secretary of the Department for Social and Cultural Affairs of the SAR since the region returned to Chinese rule in 1999./.
