Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie and the Chief of Staff of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) Keiji Akahoshi have vowed to enhance bilateral defence cooperation.

Xinhua newsagency quoted Chinese Defence Minister Liang as saying in Beijing on July 14 that both nations had stepped up cooperation to jointly cope with the current financial crisis and deepen the strategic and mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.

Liang said that the bilateral defence exchanges had made positive progress, marked by the first mutual visits of naval ships and increasing exchanges of personnel between the two defence departments.

"China is ready to work with Japan to increase mutual trust in defence, enhance Chinese-Japanese relations and maintain security and stability in the region," said Liang.

His Japanese partner Akahoshi said that Japan and China were both countries of significant influence and had an important responsibility to ensure peace and stability in the region and the world.

Japan hopes to step up exchanges and cooperation with China in defence and security, said Akahoshi. This is Akahoshi's first visit to China since he was appointed MSDF chief in March 2008./.
