Foreign ministers from China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) have vowed to strengthen cooperation on the issue of nuclear disarmament.

The statement was made by Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada and RoK Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Yu Myung Hwan after their meeting in Shanghai, China, on September 28, which aimed to prepare for an October 10 summit in Beijing.

However, no concrete efforts aimed at halting the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s nuclear programme were revealed in the statement.

Before the meeting, Japanese foreign ministry spokesman Kazuo Kodama said that the three countries needed to “deliver a strong message” to the DPRK that it must return to the stalled six-nation talks on nuclear disarmament.

The summit, slated for Beijing in October, which will likely bring together Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, RoK President Lee Myung-Bak and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, is the second of its kind.

The first summit between the three countries was held in Japan in December, 2008./.
