Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Singaporean President S. R. Nathan on Nov. 11 during hist visit to the island state to exchange views on promoting bilateral relations.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the recent fine developments in bilateral relations and agreed to further cooperation in various areas, including trade, tourism, education and in developing human resources.

President Hu said that China’s relationship with Singapore is one of the country’s top priorities and that he is willing to promote bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefit of both peoples, which will also contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in Asia.

At the meeting, the two leaders also discussed disaster relief operations and ways of dealing with the global financial crisis to achieve sustainable growth.

Later the same day the Chinese President also met with Singaporean Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew during which he suggested a three-point proposal that would boost bilateral ties.

The proposal suggests maintaining a close contact between the leaders of both countries, making full use of the Sino-Singaporean Free Trade Agreement and the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area and boosting exchanges, especially among young people.

President Hu will also attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit which is being held in Singapore during Nov. 14-15./.
