China showcased its newest and biggest commercial plane at a Hong Kong air show on September 8.

The C919 plane, being displayed at the Asian Aerospace 2009 expo, was designed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, or COMAC - an arm of Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC), according to Richard Thiele of Reed Exhibitions, an organiser of the exhibition.

Local media said the plane is seen as part of China's long-term plan to break the duopoly of Airbus and Boeing in the production of large commercial aircraft.

Chinese media reports have estimated the country's airlines will need a total of 1,600 new passenger jets by 2020 and 3,000 by 2050, costing hundreds of billions of dollars./.
