A national conference on raising people’s awareness of copyright and publishing issues was held in Ho Chi Minh City on September 13.

The conference was organised by the Copyright Office of Vietnam (COV) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in conjunction with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and Japan ’s Copyright Office.

Addressing the event, Director General of the COV Vu Manh Chu said that although monitoring and investigations into breaches of copyright have been intensified recently, infringements can still be seen in most areas including journalism, publishing, music, cinema and satellite signals.

He underlined that the conference will help raise the public’s knowledge and awareness of copyright ownership in publishing, which should cut down violations of the copyright law.

During the conference, experts from the WIPO highlighted the importance of educating people on copyright ownership and other rights that support the development of intellectual property rights in developing countries, as well as the WIPO’s assistance in this field.

They said in the right conditions, copyrights encourage domestic and international investment, which will promote the development of trade and generate more income for the government.-VNA
