The Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang on February 26 started the construction of a solid waste treatment plant partially funded by the Norwegian Government.

Of the total 216 billion VND (over 10 million USD) investment, 82 percent is sourced from the Norwegian official development assistance.

The plant is located in Phu My and Dai Tam communes and will cover 27.37 hectares.

It is designed to sort 160 tonnes of residential waste, recycle 5 tonnes of industrial plastic waste, and produce 100 tonnes of organic fertiliser every day.

Lam Huu Tung, Director of the Soc Trang Public Urban Work Company - the project’s investor - said that when operational in August 2015, the plant will replace outdoor dumping grounds, thus reducing environmental pollution and creating jobs for locals.-VNA
