Northern Coastal localities including Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Thai Binh and Nam Dinh have made necessary preparations to cope with tropical storm Kujira which is forecast to hit Quang Ninh province most heavily.

People’s Committees of the localities have banned ships travelling out to sea and asked vessels already offshore to find shelters. Farmers have also been asked to leave aquaculture areas and move to land.

Quang Ninh’s authorities implemented a series of measures to ensure traffic safety along local waterways, spillways and roads which are likely to be submerged. Households in flood- and landslide-prone areas were evacuated to higher ground.

The provincial leaders supervised the implementation of measures to deal with the typhoon.

Nam Dinh province called on 2,000 ships and boats to anchor in safety by 10 am on June 24. Local owners of aquaculture farming areas were provided with updated information on the storm.

Thai Binh authorities have moved more than 3,136 people working in aquaculture cultivation areas at sea in Tien Hai and Thai Thuy districts to safer places, and ordered the swift evacuation of households living outside local dykes to other zones.

The storm brought heavy rains to inner Hai Phong city, injuring one and sinking two ships anchored in Bach Long Vy port.

According to the National Centre for Hydrometereological Forecasting, at 11:00 am on June 24, the typhoon Kujira was 20.5 degrees north and 106.9 degrees east. Wind speeds near the centre were up to 65-90 kilometres per hour.

Within 12 next hours, the storm is forecast to move west-northwest with winds between 5-10 kilometres per hour, then weakening into a tropical low pressure.

It will bring gales in coastal areas in the Gulf of Tonkin and heavy rains and flash floods to mountainous areas of the northeast provinces from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh.

Floods are also forecast for rivers in the Hong-Thai Binh system between June 24-26 and in provinces from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh.

The standing office for the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control asked the Steering Committees for Disaster Prevention as well as Search and Rescue of the provinces of Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Can, Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh to implement measures in response to rains and floods caused by the storm.-VNA
