The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recently given the nod for excavation at an archaeological site in the northern province of Phu Tho.

The excavation will be conducted between June 20 and August 20 in a total area of 50sq.m in Phung Nguyen Village, Kinh Ke Commune in Lam Thao District.

The site was discovered in 1959 with various traces of the Phung Nguyen Culture, dating back to 4,000 to 3,500 years ago.

Objects of the Phung Nguyen Culture have also been found in other northern localities including Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Hanoi, Hai Phong and Hong (Red) River delta.

Several working tools and jewellery made of stone have been discovered at the site along with traces of unhusked rice. Phung Nguyen Culture is the initial period of the Dong Son Culture (1,000AD-100AD), which was the fundamental foundation for a culture associated with the establishment of the early Van Lang State.-VNA
