Da Nang: 8,600 households rise out of poverty in 2014

Poverty reduction policies implemented by the central city of Da Nang have produced remarkable results, contributing to lifting nearly 8,600 local households out of poverty in 2014.

Last year, the city enacted numerous policies to support the poor, including providing them with preferential business and production loans and improving the service quality of health care and other social welfare.

More than 2,500 households received preferential loans with a total capital of 52 billion VND. Disadvantaged individuals were also offered the opportunity to take part in vocational training courses on applied technologies in production and raising livestock.

Municipal authorities mobilised 11.7 billion VND in community resources to build 163 new houses and renovate 522 existing ones.

The city also provided free health insurance cards to the poor and granted exemptions, reductions, and scholarships towards the tuition fees of poor students.

According to the municipal Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs, Da Nang now has only 6,950 impoverished households, or 2.87 percent of the population, all of which they intend to bring out of poverty in the coming year-VNA
