The Tan Cang – Saigon Corporation (TCSC) on March 16 held a ceremony to inaugurate a 4.25 trillion VND (over 202 million USD) deepwater container port in Tan Thanh district, in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau .

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai spoke highly of TCSC’s efforts to put the Tan Cang-Cai Mep Port into operation after four years of construction.

The port opens up a new development phase for deepwater container ports in Vietnam , he said, adding that TCSC should focus on improving its capacity to ensure competitiveness in the world market, helping develop Vietnam into a strong sea-based economy.

According to TCSC General Director Nguyen Dang Nghiem, the Tan Cang-Cai Mep Port includes 900 metres of wharves, 60 ha of grounds, 39 cranes, four forklift trucks and two 4,000 horsepower vessels.

Tan Cang-Cai Mep is the first deepwater port capable of accommodating vessels transporting Vietnamese export goods directly to the US and Europe without transit in a third country, helping to shorten travel time by 7-10 days.

Since it was put into operation, the port has received nearly 600 ships, with a total cargo volume of 430,000 TEU (equivalent to 5.7 million tonnes)./.
