Hanoi (VNA) – The majority of deputies at the 14th National Assembly have shown their strong confidence in newly-elected NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, who won the July 22 election with nearly 98 percent of votes.

Many deputies expressed their belief that with her practical experience gained through many work positions, the new Chairwoman, together with other NA leaders, will make positive changes to the NA’s legislation and supervision activities as well as in deciding upon important matters of the country.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing first NA session, Ho Chi Minh City representative Tran Hoang Ngan, said that the election result has shown the high regard held for the top legislator.

He highlighted that voters have high hope that the NA will solve urgent problems in environmental management, food safety and traffic safety. Voters nationwide expect sustainable economic growth which goes along with a sustainable legal system, he said, underscoring that law should be built to suit the reality of the country with specific and long-term effectiveness.

Sustainable economic development should go along with the ensuring of people’s living standards and environmental protection, he stressed, noting that the massive environmental incident in four central coastal provinces caused by Taiwanese-funded Formosa Ha Tinh has drawn attention from many voters.

He suggested that the NA Committee for Science, Technology and the Environment as well as the NA Economic Committee should work harder to monitor environment protection during the implementation of industrial projects, including that of Formosa.

Meanwhile, Mai Khanh, representative of the northern province of Ninh Binh, noted that the 14 th NA is facing many challenges, including environmental pollution, which requires great efforts of both the NA’s leaders and deputies to make sure economic growth is closely associated with strict supervision of environmental issues.

At the same time, Nguyen Dac Vinh, a deputy from the central province of Nghe An, said that he hopes the 14th NA will continue completing the legal system, as well as put in place policies to support business and production, thus boosting the country’s development.

Nguyen Thi Quyen Thanh, a representative from the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long , voiced her wish that the NA will pay more consideration to agricultural provinces as well as other matters such as climate change response, drought and salinity intrusion.

On July 22, deputies also elected four NA Vice Chairs as well as members of the Standing Committee of the 14th NA.-VNA
