Seoul (VNA) – Deputy Defence Minister, Sen. Lieut. Gen Nguyen Chi Vinh expressed his wish to foster defence cooperation, a pillar in Vietnam – the Republic of Korea (RoK) ties during a meeting with RoK Deputy Foreign Minister Kang Jeong-sik in Seoul on September 12.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the meeting of ASEAN – RoK deputy defence ministers held the same day in the city.

Vinh said in the near future, Vietnam will continue welcoming Korean naval vessels, and Vietnamese naval vessels will also attend an international fleet review in the RoK.

Informing Kang that Vietnam will see off its level-2 field hospital to South Sudan in early October, Vinh suggested boosting joint work in the United Nations peacekeeping mission and continuing support to Vietnam in post-war recovery, especially in bomb and mine clearance.

He wished that the RoK would consider suitable cooperation in dioxin clearance in Vietnam.

Kang, for his part, described Vietnam as a major partner in the RoK’s New Southern Policy. He vowed to continue stepping up development projects, including post-war recovery in Vietnam.

He also pledged to do his best to promote bilateral cooperation, including in national defence.

In another meeting the same day, Deputy Defence Minister Vinh and Canadian Deputy Defence Minister Judy Thomas expressed their satisfaction about joint work in the exchange of delegations, training, the UN peacekeeping mission, and visits of naval vessels.

Both sides agreed to boost all-around ties towards the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defence cooperation and a three-year cooperation plan.

The Vietnamese side welcomed and expressed support to Canada’s involvement in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) cooperation mechanism on the basis of ASEAN’s consensus.-VNA
