Health insurance is an important national policy, stated Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh at a meeting to mark Vietnam Health Insurance Day on July 1.

Deputy PM Ninh said that over the past 20 years, health insurance has gained a lot of important achievements, reflected by 68 percent coverage of Vietnam ’s population, with 121 million people receiving treatment in 2012.

It has also contributed about 70 percent of direct financial funding for health care, with more than 33 trillion VND paid out in 2012.

To have health insurance for all people, the Deputy PM asked relevant ministries, sectors and organisations to review the implementation of the five-year-old Health Insurance Law to timely supplement and amend shortcomings.

He suggested relevant ministries and agencies pay more attention to expanding health insurance participants, particularly farmers, fishermen, low-income earners and labourers with no stable employment.

Vietnam Social Insurance statistics show that the country now has more than 60.5 million people with health insurance. The State provides all people who rendered services to the country, war veterans, elderly, ethnic minority groups and under-six-year-old children with health insurance.-VNA
