Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung on December 28 launched an order to begin construction of the Maspero river bank dyke in the Mekong delta province of Soc Trang.

With a total length of over 11,089 km, crossing the provincial capital of Soc Trang from west to east, the dyke plays an important role in preventing landslides and ensuring safety for residents and infrastructures along the river banks.

The project is invested and supervised by the Soc Trang construction project management board and it is designed by the Southern Irrigation Science Institute.

The first phase of the project will cost 587 billion VND sourced from government bonds.

Addressing the launching ceremony, Deputy PM Hung underlined the dyke’s profound significance to the provincial culture and society. Therefore, its construction requires high technical standards as well as close watchful eyes of the local officials and the management board.

He also pledged that the government will provide full capital to speed up construction, which is set to last until 2012./.
