Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem on Oct.30 received Japanese and New Zealand foreign ministers in Hanoi.

At his talk with Foreign Minister of Japan Maehara Seiji, the two sides exchanged views on bilateral cooperation, and international and regional issues of common concern.

Deputy PM Khiem affirmed that Vietnam always treasures the strategic comprehensive cooperation with Japan, saying he believed the two countries’s friendly relation would continue to develop sustainably for mutual benefit of the two peoples and for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

Foreign Minister Maehara Seiji affirmed that Japan would continue closely cooperate with Vietnam and suggested the two sides complete the strategic dialogue mechanisms, contributing to lifting Vietnam-Japan ties to a new height.

The same day, Deputy PM Khiem received Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand Murray McCully.

Minister Murray McCully spoke highly of Vietnam’s increasingly important role in the region and the world, especially the country’s successful fulfillment of the role as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 term and its ongoing role as the ASEAN chair.

He affirmed that New Zealand would maintain the English Language Training for Officials (ELTO) and increase the number of scholarships for Vietnam.

Deputy PM Khiem suggested that New Zealand continue to maintain and increase the Official Development Assistance (ODA) for Vietnam.

The two sides agreed that maintaining regular high-ranking visits would serve as a momentum to boost the bilateral relations and affirmed to closely cooperate to develop and deepen the friendship and comprehensive cooperative ties.

In that spirit, the two leaders discussed measures to promote cooperation in politics, trade, investment, labour, agriculture, education and training, culture and people-to-people exchange.

The two leaders also pledged their continued mutual support at international and regional fora, including the United Nations forum./.
