Vietnam’s victory at Dien Bien Phu and the Geneva Conference in 1954 – two historic moments in the nation’s history - were discussed at a seminar held at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in the United Kingdom on March 7.

As one of the activities organised for Vietnam Week, which ran from March 3-7 in London to mark the 60 th anniversary of the victory at Dien Bien Phu (which falls on May 7), the seminar drew a large number of foreign students studying at the school.

Professor Matthew Jones from LSE, a historian specialising in researching the last dynasties in the Southeast Asian region and the wars in Vietnam , was the guest speaker at the event.

He outlined Vietnam ’s nine-year war of resistance against French colonialists through vivid imagery on the battles that took place in the Dien Bien battleground.

The speaker also talked about the 1954 Geneva Conference and analysed the correlation between the participating countries.

Apart from the seminar, a series of other activities took place during the Vietnam Week, including a photo exhibition on Vietnam in the 1980s taken by British diplomat John Ramsden. A display of Vietnamese street food was also held to promote the land, people and culture of Vietnam to people from around the world.

LSE is one of the three most prestigious universities in the UK , behind Oxford and Cambridge . About 70 Vietnamese students are studying at the school.-VNA
