The northern province of Dien Bien, where the historic 1954 Dien Bien Phu victory that put an end to French colonial rule in Vietnam took place, has set a target of welcoming 400,000 tourists, including 70,000 foreign visitors, this year.

To reach that goal, the mountainous province has mapped out plans to develop tourism and attract more visitors to the locality, especially during the 60 th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7).

Since the beginning of this year, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has restored and embellished Dien Bien Phu historical relic sites.

The province is expected to finish at an early date the construction of a museum showcasing the historical victory related exhibits.

Deputy Director of the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum Vu Thi Tuyet Nga said that nearly 2,000 documents and objects will be displayed at the museum.

During the Lunar New Year holiday, thousands of people flocked to Dien Bien Phu historical relic sites, including the Dien Bien Phu Campaign headquarters, A1 Hill, De Castries Bunker and Muong Thanh bridge.

The Dien Bien Phu Campaign complex is home to nearly 40 historical sites that have been recognised as special national relic sites.-VNA
