Ca Mau (VNA) – The first five houses under a programme on building disaster-proof houses for people in flood-prone areas were handed over to families in the Mekong Delta provinces of Ben Tre and Ca Mau on May 15 and 16.

Among the beneficiary families, two are in Thanh Phu district of Ben Tre province and three others are in U Minh district of Ca Mau province.

A representative of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Urban Sewerage and Development Co. Ltd (Busadco), the house constructor, said each disaster-proof house costs 50 million VND (2,200 USD) and is prefabricated with non-metal, heat resistant, soundproof and waterproof materials.

Each house is completed in four days at the maximum but still has its safety and quality ensured, Busadco said, noting that the remaining 35 houses in the programme will be handed over to residents in Ca Mau and Ben Tre provinces by the end of June.

Total construction cost is about 2 billion VND (87,900 USD) funded by Tan Dai Hung Plastic Joint Stock Company.

Doan Thi Tuyet Nga, Director of the Department for Science-Technology and International Cooperation under the General Department of Disaster Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, highly valued the businesses’ sponsorship and hoped that they will continue their support in the time ahead.

She noted that residents in disaster-prone areas have encountered an array of difficulties, and unqualified houses have also made them face high risks posed by worsening climate change.

The programme on building disaster-proof houses is practical and humanitarian assistance for people in Ben Tre and Ca Mau, two provinces that are susceptible to natural disasters, she added.-VNA
