Dong Nai (VNA) – The southeastern province of Dong Nai has been taking various measures to reduce the amount of waste burial and encourage garbage treatment through recycling and incineration.

According to Dong Nai Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the province produces 1,600 tonnes of garbage every day but only 23 percent of them is incinerated or recycled, and all the remaining is buried.

Some enterprises have been building incineration facilities but the number is few , which only cut waste burial rate to 40 percent, which is still a long way from the province’s goal of 15 percent.

According to the department, enterprises still prefer burying garbage due to the higher payment they receive compared to incineration. They are paid 550,000 VND (24 USD) for disposing one tonne of garbage in dumping grounds, while receiving only 420,000 VND for incinerating the same amount of garbage.

At a meeting with the department on April 20, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Vo Van Chanh asked relevant agencies to readjust waste treatment price to encourage garbage recycling and incineration.-VNA
