The People’s Court of Nhon Trach district in the southern province of Dong Nai on June 17 sentenced Ha Van Thanh, a worker at the Formosa Company in Nhon Trach 3 industrial park, to 8 months in prison, for stealing property.

According to the indictment of the local People’s Procuracy, on May 14, the Nghe An-born defendant, 47, took advantage of a protest against China’s illegal placement of an oil rig in Vietnam’s waters. He joined a group of extremists entering Formosa’s factory to destroy property and break into the company for burgling.

Thanh stole two 32-inch TV screens and a computer screen, together worth 8 million VND (375 USD) in value.

He was later detected and arrested by police.

At the trial, Thanh admitted his illegal behaviour.

Earlier on June 13, Phan Van Giau, 21, and Thach Quy, 19, were sentenced to 6 months and 5 months behind bars, respectively, for stealing property.

In a related move, local authorities have so far commenced legal proceedings against 253 arrestees involved in 26 criminal cases of “causing social disturbance”, “destroying property,” “stealing property,” “openly appropriating property,” and “resisting against on-duty officials”.-VNA
