Cambodia has about 8 million people aged from 15-64 among its 15-million-strong population, according to the 2014 socio-economic census report announced by the Cambodia National Institute of Statistics on October 7.

Of the country’s population, 7 million are male and the remaining 8 million are female, said the report.

About 50 percent of the country’s population have access to clean water in the rainy season, rising to 60 percent in the dry season. Meanwhile, 56 percent of Cambodians use sanitary household toilets.

As many as 75 percent of the population aged 6 and above are able to read and write, with 70 percent being female and 80 percent being male. Nearly 85 percent of children aged 6-11 enjoy school, revealed the report.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Cambodian Minister of Planning Chhay Than said the report will help Cambodia design and realise socio-economic programmes.

Meanwhile, Cambodia’s 2014 agriculture statistics also showed that the country had 1.9 million farmer households with nearly 9 million farmers. Its total farming area was 3.1 million hectares with an output equivalent to one third of the country’s GDP.-VNA
