The scholars, six from universities in Hanoi and five from Ho Chi Minh City, will leave for Singapore by the month’s end to pursue three- or four-year undergraduate degree courses.
The total estimated value of the 11 scholarship awards is 1.24 million USD, or an average of 113,000 USD for each scholarship.
“As a small country, Singapore has a limited capacity. However, within our resource constraints, we are committed to sharing our experiences and expertise with Vietnam and our ASEAN friends in a practical and tangible way via Singapore’s technical assistance programme,” Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam Simon Wong said at the awards ceremony for six students from Hanoi on July 15.
A separate ceremony was held on July 14 in Ho Chi Minh City to present scholarship to five students.
At the sixth ASEAN Summit in Hanoi in December 1998, then Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong announced that Singapore would offer undergraduate scholarships to ASEAN students. The objective of the Singapore scholarship at the time was to help alleviate the problem of educating young people in ASEAN countries due to difficulties brought about by the Asian financial crisis.
Since its inception, 155 Vietnamese students have received Singapore scholarship, including 11 students selected for this year./.
