Ethnic languages coming to television

Vietnam Television (VTV) on Feb. 8 hosted a conference in Quy Nhon city of central Binh Dinh province on producing TV programmes in ethnic languages, with the first edition to air on VTV5 on March 1.

The conference was chaired by VTV Deputy General Director Lam Kiet Tuong.

Part of a television project on ethnic languages in 2011-2015 period, aiming to raise public awareness of guidelines and policies of the Party and State’s law on the languages ​​of ethnic minorities, the programme will improve people's knowledge, as well as promote economic development and contribute to maintaining the cultural identity of ethnic minority groups.

VTV plans to coordinate with 42 local television stations nationwide in training staff and preparing equipment for making the programme.

Recently, many ethnic minority groups in most mountainous regions have gained access to television service transmitted via satellite, which will allow the programme to reach a potentially large audience./.
