The 6th national sports festival for ethnic minorities will be opened in the mountainous northern province of Yen Bai and the coastal central province of Ninh Thuan, announced the General Sports Department in Hanoi on July 14.

A representative from the dpartment, Le Anh Tho, said the tournament aims to develop the movement of and physical training to improve people’s health and spiritual life.

The athletes, who are all ethnic minority people, will compete in men’s football, men and women’s volleyball, cross-country running, stick pushing, tug-of-war, crossbow shooting. The event in Yen Bai will include Con throwing, a traditional game of the Tay and Nung groups, while stilt walking will be added to contests held in Ninh Thuan province.

A total of 16 teams and 715 athletes have so far registered to join the games, which is scheduled to take place from July 21-26 in Ninh Thuan and from September 18-23 in Yen Bai.

The festival’s organising board is preparing facilities and medical support for the event./.
