The European Union (EU) will provide 4 million USD for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) to maintain its activities in 2013.
ECCC spokesperson Neth Pheaktra said that his court needs about 3 million USD to pay salaries to its Cambodian staff.
The EU and its member countries are one of the ECCC’s largest international donors with around 43 million USD, accounting for 24 percent of the cost of its Khmer Rouge trials, he said.
Since being established in 2006, the ECCC has spent about 173 million USD paying for its Cambodian and international staffs, he added.
In early 2012, the court sentenced a former Khmer Rouge leader who was Chairman of the notorious S-21 Prison Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch to life imprisonment for his involvement in the death of about 15,000 people.
At present, the ECCC is conducting trials against two other former Khmer Rouge leaders, namely Khieu Samphan and Noun Chea, on charges of committing war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.-VNA
