The European Union (EU) has decided to open negotiations on free trade agreements (FTAs) with member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), German news agency DPA said on December 24.

The decision marks new efforts to expand business activities between Europe and Asia as the world escapes from the economic crisis, the agency said.

According to a press release by the European Commission (EC), the commission will conduct free trade negotiations with individual ASEAN countries, with talks with Singapore slated for 2010 as the first step.

In 2008, two-way trade between the EU and ASEAN reached 175 billion EUR (240 billion USD), making ASEAN the EU’s third largest trade partner after the US and China./.
