European Union countries on Dec. 22 agreed to start negotiations with Russia on nuclear energy cooperation.

The 27 EU countries authorised the European Commission (EC) to begin dialogue between the European Atomic Energy Community and the Russian Federation to work together for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

The EC’s Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said this is an important step, which would give new impetus to EU-Russia relations in the energy sector.

He stressed the comprehensive agreement on nuclear cooperation would be beneficial to both sides.

Nuclear energy generates almost one third of the electricity in the EU and two thirds of the bloc's low-carbon electricity.

The energy cooperation with Russia is part of a broader push by the EC to secure stable energy supplies.

The EC said the deal would focus on nuclear safety, nuclear liability and non-proliferation issues.

The EU has already signed nuclear cooperation agreements with Australia, Canada, Kazakhstan and the United States, alongside looser deals with Japan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan, and a research and development package with China./.
